[Fandfs] book mobile

Bookmobile donations are a perfect tribute to Cynthia Williams, and I have a great story to prove the point.

When I finished my Peace Crops service in the summer of 1994 and decided to "return to my roots" (i.e. move into the family home in Carmel Highlands), I, of course, spent my first night as a Carmel Highlands resident having dinner at Cynthia's (her cooking was always so good).

Over dinner Cynthia said that I must come to the fire station the next day between 11:30 and noon, because the Monterey County Library book mobile would be making its twice monthly Carmel Highlands visit.  I arrived promptly the next day and as soon as the book mobile opened its doors, Cynthia pushed me in and said that I absolutely had to apply for a library card that moment "in order to settle you here".  After all you don't really live somewhere unless you have a local library card.

Cynthia had been a faithful corespondent to me during my 2 years in Peace Corps and as my time over seas ended she sent me postcards of Pt. Lobos and Big Sur "to remind you why you are returning".  It meant a lot to me that Cynthia wanted me to settle down here as part of her community (including the bi-monthly book mobile visits) and, of course, she is part of why I did so.

Sixteen years later I have gotten a lot of use out of that library card, having actively patronized at least 11 of the 17 county branches plus the book mobile!
