Cynthia was the woman who was always wearing an apron when Iwent to visit her.
She was feeding chickens, reading a book, entertaining friends. She also believed in naps which I believe we all should believe in.
As a child, I was always afraid to talk to her because of the booming voice and direct manner. She was the one who could sing louder than anyone else at the end of caroling when all other voices were getting sleepy and especially I hear her wailing on "Five Golden Rings" during the famous Twelve days of Christmas with Alan Marcus on the piano. She had her hand firmly on my dads shoulder while he was playing. She had the sense to know when it was time to go by announcing; "Okay Merry Christmas to all, Merry Christmas to all. Come on lets get on with the next neighbors house. People have bedtimes you know.."
I loved her book of Carols that was old and torn up.
Again at her house for Easter,. I remember her handing me a beer to hide for the parents... after I had collected all my easter eggs and she said; "Come on.. there are some thirst people here, you have to hide this right away." and I did what I was told right away.. When Cynthia gave you a command, you did not think twice,,, you had to do it,,, you just had to do it.
My favorite event she instituted was New YEARS. It was down at her house that I imagined what it was like all across the world what it was like for it to be morning when it was dark where I was and that we could wish other people Happy New Years.. It was such a concept!!
Talk about going global... She was again way way way ahead of her time... I loved banging on the gongs and pots and pans and yelling Loudly Happy New Years in China.. Happy New Years in New Zealand.. Noboby cared that we were yelling too loud. It was just pure fun.
As I grew up, I would see Cynthia at various concerts and fundraisers and I would greet her and say stupidly: Hi Cynthia Its, anina marcus and she would quickly answer: "I know who you are" as if to say You can't fool me chicka dee.
I want to steal from the song: "Oh Christmas tree Oh chrismas tree how everygreen your branches and say
"Cynthia Oh Cynthia How ever strong you will always be in my deep love of the Highlands... "
