For Cynthia Williams November 2010
You held my adolescence,
You sheltered my youth:
A home for my hope,
A nest for my heart.
Your house and hospitality,
Your laughter and courage
Let me imagine
Dreams of justice
Worlds of peace
Could soon grow real.
The freedom of songs:
Echoes over canyons and coves
Carved mercy into my curiosity
And compassion into
The journey of my joy.
From the day of my birth
Carried by fathers
And guided by brothers
And daughters
And sons and songs
You sheltered me
Exposed me
And opened my eyes.
What better footprints
Could any leave?
