Tonight, Wednesday, Cynthia was lying on the couch in the living room and seeming very much like Cynthia.
We had a spectacular sunset in her honor.When planting a cypress tree this afternoon (when one is really busy already, what better time to do things like plant cypress trees....but it is one of those issues that reemerges every Xmas when seeking the perfect tree and I wonder why don't I just plant some trees.....so Molly brought me six very root bound little cypresses from the nursery, soon to reappear in Xmas finery some time in the future.)... anyhow, while planting I had dug up a beautiful piece of abalone shell which happens often as our houses are all built on a midden. Cynthia has always felt a deep connection with the Native Americans who used to live in this neighborhood, and I took her the piece of shell. It was just the corner of the shell, but you could tell how huge the whole shell had once been.
Cynthia seems to be in the past, the present and the future all at one time as she sat rubbing the shell.
Last night, Monday, she came up to the living room for the first time. Riding up the hall in her wheel chair, she then sat near the fire and could not quite figure things out. She did not know when she had last been in the living room. We moved her out of the chair and onto the couch where she had a better sense of orientation. None the less, her bewilderment is disturbing to those of us who have for so many years
